Mountain Pine snapped a four-game losing streak in a big way Friday, utilizing a 21-point performance from senior Summer Godwin to down Magnet Cove, 50-33.
Despite some early foul trouble, the Lady Red Devils (3-6, 1-2 Class 7-2A) started strong, utilizing aggressive defense and taking advantage of Magnet Cove turnovers to build an 11-9 first-quarter lead and outscored the Lady Panthers, 17-5, in the second quarter, to take a 28-14 lead into halftime.
Out of the break, the Lady Red Devils kept their foot on the gas, with Godwin scoring nine of Mountain Pine's 11 third-quarter points.
"Summer is the heart and soul of this team," head coach Todd Willis said. "The girls know that. When she busts her butt the way she has, it brings up the team and gives the team the confidence they need."
In the fourth quarter, a combined effort from Godwin, freshman Kalariya McDaniel and seniors Tanay Tash and Grace Galarza paced Mountain Pine to its first victory since November 30.
"Our focus and our hustle were the difference tonight," Willis said. "We've made a team goal to improve each and every game and we're seeing that with the way we've played the last several games against good teams. We're making great strides and it shows the girls the progress they've made from game one until now."
Godwin's 21 points led all scorers. McDaniel scored 11 points with Galarza adding seven points against her former team.
Sophomore Kailynn Harville led the Lady Panthers (2-8, 0-3 Class 7-2A) in scoring with 10 points.
"Every one of our girls on the floor worked hard tonight from beginning to end," Willis said. "That's what it's going to take from us. Our performance tonight will propel us forward into the Mount Ida game next week. I'm excited to get back on the floor again and I know our girls are, too."
