Moral of this story: I now think of players differently. I really don't think about them as those desperately trying to play the f2p servers. Yes, they'll get there eventually, but it's so easy for them to spend 10+ hours wandering aimlessly having the best time. These small things they have added over the years are likely helping those new cheap RS gold players more than people as a somewhat cynical community might want to think. Both matches start you off with a basic tutorial but then RS3 takes it much further and can be absolutely more useful to new players. Offering a"route" system to help lead you round the sport before you are more comfortable setting your goals as this is ultimately a sandbox MMO. The one thing bit un-user friendly is that the interface, which is true in the two games, even though they have both extra stuff recently to help with that. OSRS added a search function into the settings to discover specific stuff whilst RS3 added a wiki search button to its chat menu. The wiki is essentially the official game manual and they work right with the game creators. Furthermore RS3 is frequently referred to as ezscape from the OSRS community since it has a number of quality of life attributes designed to make the game simpler and accessible.
