Future Stars of Tomorrow: P.J. Powell

May 16, 2018

From the moment he picked up a baseball for the first time, everyone knew that there was something special about eight-year-old P.J. Powell. In just a few short years, the talented Marked Tree second grader has taken Northeast Arkansas by storm and is quickly making a name for himself on the national level.

"P.J. has always been really athletic," Patrick Powell Sr. said. "At four years old, he was playing baseball and looked like he had the hang of it. Each year, he's stuck with it and gotten better and better."

Today, Powell is taking the ball deep--consistently--leading both Marked Tree and the Arkansas Nemesis in home runs, as well as most offensive categories, and is working toward a special goal.

"P.J. hit his first of many home runs this year," Powell Sr. said. "He usually plays on 200-foot fields, and hit it over the fence around 175 feet. Now he wants to hit a home run over the 200-foot mark. He's getting very close."

In July, Powell will compete in the 7U World Series in Bixby, Oklahoma, looking to cap what has been an amazing season.

"P.J.'s teams have won multiple tournaments this year," Powell Sr. said. "From six rings to multiple trophies, he and his team continue to improve every day. Looking ahead to the upcoming World Series, P.J. is working on practicing hard and staying focused."

A young man of few words, those who know Powell best know that when it comes to his abilities on the field, he lets his bat and glove do the talking for him.

"P.J. loves baseball," Powell Sr. said. "If he ever has free time, then he's outside throwing the ball up in the air and catching it. He's always doing something to get better at the game. He's quiet and doesn't talk much, but he's well-respected. He loves sports and he loves playing games. He's a good kid and has never had a problem with anyone."
