More Than Just A Game: Fountain Lake, Hot Springs Renews Rivalry in Style

April 4, 2018

For the first time since 2007, Hot Springs and Fountain Lake will face off on the football field... but it's more than just a game.

On Tuesday, in a press conference at the Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce, representatives from both schools announced an action-packed event dubbed the First Security Bank Kickoff Classic, which will include competitive activities for more than 700 students between the two districts leading up to Garland County's first high school football game of the season on Thursday, Aug. 30.

"It's more than a game," Fountain Lake Athletic Director Marc Davis said. "The big emphasis we have is on inclusion--including as many school organizations and clubs as possible. The whole week will be a friendly competition between schools. Studies show that students involved in extracurricular activities have better grades, better attendance, less tardies and have less disciplinary issues."

The week-long event, sponsored by First Security Bank in Hot Springs, aims to bring two local schools together in friendly competition as well as giving back to the communities they both call home.

"It's great," First Security Bank President Scott Dews said. "We have two schools who are really separated only by downtown Hot Springs. To renew that rivalry--and this is something we plan on continuing into the future--and to give back to the nonprofits is the exciting part of the arrangement for us. Bringing the schools together and the communities of Hot Springs and Hot Springs Village together to work toward a common goal to get the kids involved is going to be something to see."

The idea for the Classic arose during the third week of last season and both schools are excited for its growth potential.

"It's more than just a game," Hot Springs Athletic Director Tony Hines said. "For years, we have been friends and family. We want to continue this tradition and continue to make it better and make it grow."

The First Security Kickoff Classic will be broadcast LIVE by XZero Sports' Mark Oliver and KVRE FM's Tracy Simpson on 92.9 KVRE FM on Thursday, Aug. 30 beginning at 6:50 p.m.
